Here is a story about a woman who was fired from her reporting job over her personal blog. I really think there will be more clearly deined laws about this in the future. It is freedom of speech to have an opinion and be ahuman outside of one's job. Unless you are saying something a la Paula Deen about longing for the good old slave days, people should just be allowed to be themselves.
It is an odd intersection of the personal and private on the web. If half the silly jokes I make with my friends were published I am sure no one would hire me ;)
FYI this is why my real FB and other personal web personas have my puppy as my profile pic and an assumed name! lol
It's not uncommon at all. Dooce.com is run by a woman who lost her job because of blogging. And then she became a professional blogger.
ReplyDeleteIt is things like this which make me weary about getting more involved with my online self. I don't want to say the wrong thing, aggrevate an amount of people and become job-less! If I do continue to blog, I may keep a professional blog and then a personal blog (but as a different persona). Interesting you bring up the use of your dogs picture for your profile picture in order to keep your privacy safe! I have always wondered why people use pictures of animals for their profile pictures and what you are doing makes complete sense!
ReplyDeleteWell, these folks were doing a tell all type of thing. If they had blogged in this manner but never touched the topic of work, they probably would have been fine. The reporter shared too much (we don't want to know about her lack of bra her feelings about old people should not be shared -- ratings and reputation matter in her field). I believe dooce said some unflattering things about her employer or boss, quite directly. People don't lose jobs just for blogging in general, but content and tone matter.
ReplyDeleteYes just weird how what used to be off hand little jokes are now so much more because of the written nature of the internet-I still think people should be able to say whatever they want, however I do not on the internet either anymore ;) Someone else be the judicial precedent if freedom of speech will win out and I need my job lol
